Nabil Hamidi, an undergraduate student pursuing a dual BA in International Relations and Moral Philosophy at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane (AUI) and Arizona State University (ASU), recently interviewed Peter Singer, the influential ethics scholar. The discussion was the result of themes covered in the Environmental Ethics course at the AUI School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS).
Peter Singer is an Australian moral philosopher, currently the Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University. He is known for his work on the ethics of our treatment of animals and for his writings on the moral obligations of the affluent to assist in dealing with global poverty. In 2005, Time magazine listed Singer as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. The Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute ranked him 3rd among Global Thought Leaders for 2013.
Dr. Peter Borkowski and Mr. Hamidi had a fruitful discussion with the philosopher about how human, animal, and environmental welfare are inextricably tied together and how Singer’s ethical philosophy relates to the African context.
