In the World Robotics Olympiad finals at Morocco country level, held in Casablanca on Sunday the 21st of June, AUI team secured the second spot and a chance to compete in Europe. The WRO contest is open to people at most 19 years old.
AUI team was composed of freshmen Yahya Chami, Youssef Boufous and Rayane Benamre, coached by former WRO participant and current AUI senior, Abderrahman Elarfaoui.
The team competed in the open-ended category where the participants had to make a robotic solution for the theme "Robotics helping Culture". AUI team's robot was a calligraphy instructing robot. An expert calligrapher writes on a digital tablet, and the robotic arm mimics the strokes on paper. A calligraphy student can hold the robotic arm and thus learn the strokes. The strokes can be played from digitally stored strokes from an expert calligrapher, allowing for asynchronous learning of this important artistic heritage of Morocco and many other countries. AUI competed against another university and high schools in the Future Innovators Seniors category and placed second. This allows AUI to compete in the open championships in Croatia in October 2026.
