Athina W. Tesfa-Yohannes has nearly a decade of teaching ESL and social science subjects within higher education in the MENA region, including prior stints in Turkey and Palestine. She has an educational background spanning three continents, starting her career as a researcher before transitioning to education. She is currently pursuing her doctoral studies at the University of Toronto within the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), studying Social Justice Education. The Eritrean-American has also been conducting research focusing on topics such as access to education, and how educational technology can best be utilized within developing country contexts. A firm believer in Pan-African ideals and in empowering the continent’s youth through education, she utilizes her diasporic background in her pedagogical philosophy, using decolonial and empathy-driven approaches to teaching and research. She is now based in Morocco working for Al Akhawayn University as a lecturer and EdTech faculty trainer.
