Hillary Clinton Center for Women’s Empowerment

Empowering Women Leaders of Morocco

The Hillary Clinton Center for Women’s Empowerment (HCC) at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane (AUI) was established in 1999 on the occasion of then First Lady Hillary Clinton’s commencement speech to the second graduating class of Al Akhawayn University.

The HCC has a contemporary focus combined with an awareness of historical forces that shape current gender discourses in North Africa. It is a center for grassroots outreach and interdisciplinary scholarship on gender and women’s rights issues. The HCC is committed to promoting excellence through diversity and inclusion of underrepresented groups, more particularly women.

Vision

Working towards becoming leading gender research and social justice center in Morocco and in North Africa, we endeavor to infuse scholarship with practice and experiential gender education with community engagement. Committed to bridging theory and practice, the private and public, we envision to draw dialogic alliances by creating a conversation between local communities, policymakers, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), activists, Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs), scholar, and students to contribute to gender theory, and women’s and minority rights in North Africa.

Mission

  • Research

Aspiring to promote transnational gender research and scholarship, the HCC focuses on myriad interrelated issues indicative of the multilayered spheres of life affecting women. Some of our research leading themes are women and the challenges of covid-19, women and protest, women and development, women and power, and women and the notions of rights.

  • Community Outreach

The vision of the HCC is also translated into a commitment to community outreach activities. We aim to engage with our communities and provide a space for dialogue and exchange of ideas, promoting and contributing to the discussions on gender in Morocco and North Africa.

  • Collaboration & Partnership

Envisioning the creation of an open and accessible platform for dialogue and community engagement with the different stakeholders (Local community, NGOs, IGOs, scholars, policymakers, students, etc.), the HCC welcomes opportunities of collaborations and partnerships that encourage, and are embedded in, an intersectional and transnational approach to sex, gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, age, and women’s rights issues.
