Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane (AUI) has launched the second edition of its Tech Skills Marketplace—MSME Paid Internship Program, an initiative by the African Engineering and Technology (Afretec) Network that is redefining the business-student collaboration model in Morocco.
Embracing a broader scope with a deeper impact, the program is surging forward after the success of its first edition at the University.
The main subject of the Tech Skills Marketplace is ‘connection,’ bringing students that have the skills and knowledge together with business start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in need of practical technology solutions.
The program integrates paid internships, authentic industry challenges, and close cooperation between academia and the private sector in Morocco.
This year the initiative is featuring collaborating students from AUI's School of Science and Engineering (SSE) and School of Business Administration (SBA), with 45 start-ups also participating.
Besides technical skills, such as programming, software development, problem-solving, innovation, and data analytics, the initiative focuses on employability.
Professor Salah Al-Majeed, Dean of AUI’s School of Science and Engineering, commented, “By working directly with local, regional, and national businesses, students gain a more definitive insight into what’s expected of them in the workplace while learning more about entrepreneurship and market dynamics.
“These experiences aren’t always accessible in a traditional academic setting, and for many participants, the Tech Skills Marketplace is their stepping-stone from student life into a professional career.”
The program’s implementation has been made possible through the financial support of the Afretec Network, AUI’s continued collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University Africa, and the Mastercard Foundation.
Faculty, deans, and the implementation team at Al Akhawayn University have worked closely to make sure that the program meets both student aspirations and business needs.
Tech Skills Marketplace is a continuation of the previous Afretec-backed programs AUI has supported and is a reflection of the university's long-term commitment to youth empowerment, experiential learning, and innovation.
In addition, it embodies a common belief that stronger links between universities and industry are vital to helping construct a resilient, innovation-driven economy in Morocco.
